Blinds, shutters or shades: which should you choose?
There are seemingly endless varieties of window treatments available for your home, with many different price points, pros and cons, and design options. It can be hard to choose. Ultimately, you must decide which look and attributes are most important to you. Our shop at home design consultants can help you understand the options and make selections.
Blinds offer unparalleled light control. From complete darkness to maximum sunlight, you have the option to adjust the angle of the slats to let in varying amounts of light. They also require more maintenance than shades or shutters and dusting them can quickly become tedious. Esthetically, blinds provide very clean lines, although not everyone is a fan of that look.
Shades fit inside the window frame and because they’re made of fabric, their look is very customizable. They must be raised or lowered to allow light in the room, so they don’t offer quite the same level of light control as blinds. Importantly, they can help reduce heating costs by providing an additional barrier to the cold during wintertime.
Window shutters provide a more traditional look and are a great option for homes that receive a good deal of heat and sunlight during the day. Usually made of wood, though available in a variety of materials, they are set inside the window frame. Their slats offer an excellent ability to darken a room without restricting air flow, and they are easy to clean. That is because the slats are rigid, so they do not move when you try to dust them. The main drawbacks are that of all the available options, they offer the least amount of light control.
